Artistic Inspirations: Athens Edition

Over the summer I've visited many cities and even so more galleries, discovering new work, connecting with artists and gallery owners. Talking about art inspired me to share more on the things I make.

This week the blog is all about the two paths in my work and how they got to be. Some backgrounds and method of work.

In this newsletter I want to share the background on a set of paintings I'm working on now. The inspiration and the why. It also shows how both lines influence each other.

JUST FOR YOU:

Senses Athens, Work in Progress

Athens Exarcheia
– the revolutionary side.

This summer I traveled to Athens for ythe next installment of the Virtual Journeys. The route I planned took me from the top of Lycabetus, down into Kolonaki, via Exarcheia to end at Kerameikos cemetery. I took over 1000 photo's that I will be processing in the next few months.

The area of Exarcheia is where a large number of revolutionaries live and in the past many protests started. This protest is present in the abundant graffiti that can be found on almost every building, sign, fence or any other available surface. Protest is in the air.

What struck me in this area was that the graffiti was in many layers and the messages overlapping. This results in a colourful, but almost unreadable protest. Initially I wanted to make a location based work in the Senses series here but a lack of time and materials prevented that from happening. Also some logistics stood in the way.

This was the inspiration for the graffiti work that you see a detail of above. I made this when I returned from Athens in the UK. Here I used only one word-pair and only the primary colours plus black and white. Repeating the same word-pair again and again, layering them in different colours it becomes almost impossible to read. There will be six of these paintings, each with one word-pair.

With these works I want to show that protest exists in every society and that at first glance we might not understand that protest. We need to make an effort to understand the reasons behind them.
