Discover Hidden influences of Virtual Journeys

In my latest blog, I dive into three powerful storytelling forms; collages, graphic novels, and the photo novelle, and how they influenced my own work. From graphic novels like XIII, Bilal, Moebius via Georges Braque’s early collages to the cinematic photo sequences of Marie-Françoise Plissart, these traditions all found their way into what I now call Virtual Journeys.

The blog is here: https://steit.net/collage-or-graphic-novel. In this newsletter you will find some background on the Graphical travel Log.

The Hidden Inspirations Behind Virtual Journeys

Exploring how collages, graphic novels, and photo novelles inspired my Virtual Journeys, a photo-based, graphic novel-style travel log capturing urban life.

JUST FOR YOU:

Photo based travel-log

A mix of styles
– born from early facinations.

My graphic travel log style grew from a mix of influences. Instead of telling stories with paint, pen, or actors, I use photography arranged like a visual narrative. Each image builds on the next, capturing city streets, people, and fleeting moments that form one bigger story.

It’s not just about places, it’s about how places feel, how people move through them, and how memories glue together like a collage. A visual journey through urban life, one frame at a time.

If you’ve ever wondered where my approach comes from, or why I see a travel log as more than a diary, this blog lays it all out.

From reading comics
– to mature graphical novels

Like almost all teens I have been reading books and comics since childhood. We all grow up with images and stories we are told before we learn how to read ourselves. As a young adult my interest shifted from the 'standard' comics to graphic novels where great detail and time is given to the artwork.

Artists like Don Lawrence, who hand painted all illustrations for The Trigan Empire and Storm. Enki Bilal who used acrylic, pastel, and crayon to create his images. William Vance who created the artwork for series XIII used cinematographic styes to tell their stories. All made an impact on me on how to create unique visual stories and complete worlds.

So now 'stuck' with many photos from Tokyo and influences from my past I started out to create my own version. Next week's blog is all about the processing of the images.

Let’s keep travelling together.
One story,
one image,
one journey at a time.
