July and its summer days are here.
Summer is slowly turning into autumn and I'm looking back on a very productive summer in Derbyshire, UK and in Cologne Germany where I made over a dozen paintings. And in Athens, Greece I shot well over one thousand photo's for the next in the Virtual Journey series.
Over the warm days I decided to start a new blog series where I explain more on the backgrounds of my artworks. Alternating over the months you will learn more on the backgrounds of the Virtual Journey Cities and the 6 word-pairs that for the senses project.
Writing mode activated.
In the first blog I’m writing how the initial spark ignited for 'World Communication' and the Virtual Journeys.

JUST FOR YOU:
Why Virtual Journeys?
We are all the same
– but different.
In the blog post you can read about where the spark came from that started my interest of other cultures. Studying in a city that has a very international orientation was also part of that.
"we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike"
Maya Angelou
The first instalment of the Virtual Journeys was Tokyo Shibuya Station. I wanted to let the viewer experience a location that was different from theirs, far from what they are accustomed to and comfortable with.
To my surprise this setting was not as exotic or different than my daily surroundings and I began noticing similarities. A year later I was in Istanbul where I made similar photos and again I saw people doing more or less the same. Similar but different.
My focus shifted from showing how foreign these places are to starting to show how similar we all are. We all do the same thing. We meet friends, go shopping, have fun, are depressed, happy or sad. We wish to live in good health, safety and peace. Take care of our loved ones and people around us. The only thing that is different is the location.
With my series Virtual Journeys I look for and show the similarities and the differences that make us human.
